Football or Soccer? World’s Most Popular Sport

Football or Soccer? What do we call it?

Football is a sport that millions of people around the world love and enjoy. But did you know that in some countries, it is called soccer? Why is that? And how did football evolve into the game we know today? In this blog post, we will explore the history and development of football, and why it has different names in different places.

The Origins of Football

The earliest evidence of a game similar to football dates back to ancient China, around the 2nd or 3rd century BC. The game was called cuju, and it involved kicking a leather ball through a hole in a cloth hung between two poles. Cuju was played for fun, exercise, and military training.

Other ancient civilizations also had their own versions of football, such as the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Mesoamericans. However, these games were not standardized and often involved violence and brutality.

The Modern Football

The modern football emerged in England in the 19th century, when various schools and clubs started to play different forms of football with different rules. Some of these games allowed handling the ball, while others did not. Some had fixed number of players, while others did not. Few had goals with nets, while others had posts or flags.

In 1863, a group of representatives from different clubs met in London to form the Football Association (FA), the first governing body of football. They agreed on a set of rules that banned handling the ball and tripping opponents. These rules became known as association football, or soccer for short.

The word soccer comes from the abbreviation of association (assoc.) and the suffix -er. Soccer was a slang term used by students at Oxford and Cambridge universities, who liked to add -er to the end of words. For example, rugby was called rugger, breakfast was called brekker, and soccer was called soccer.

Through British sailors, traders, soldiers, and colonists soccer spread to other parts of the world. It became especially popular in South America, where countries like Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay developed their own styles and skills. Soccer also reached North America, but it faced competition from other sports like baseball and American football.

In 1904, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) was founded in Paris as the international governing body of soccer. FIFA organized the first World Cup in 1930, which was won by Uruguay. The World Cup is now the most watched sporting event in the world.

Football or Soccer?

Today, soccer is still the official name of the sport in countries that have their own versions of football, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, in most other countries, especially in Europe, Africa, and Asia, the sport is called football.

Some people argue that football is a more accurate and universal name for the sport, since it involves kicking a ball with the foot. Others argue that soccer is a more distinctive and historical name for the sport, since it reflects its origins and evolution.

Whatever you call it, football or soccer is a sport that unites people across cultures and continents. It is a sport that inspires passion and emotion in players and fans alike. A sport that celebrates diversity and creativity. It is a sport that everyone can enjoy.
